Office Parties and Safety

When it's Office Party Time here are a few points to consider so everyone has a good time:

  • make sure you make it clear that attendance at your party is voluntary
  • set start and finish times for your function
  • serve food
  • provide non-alcoholic alternatives and low alcohol beer
  • provide jugs of water and glasses (sounds obvious, but I suggest you do it!)
  • provide supervision to prevent excessive drinking
  • provide supervision of young employees and those under the legal drinking age
  • decide what you will do with people who have drunk too much (taxis, skippers, mini buses)
  • instead of an after work party consider hosting an off-site family-friendly function during the day.

You may also think it a good idea to display your sexual harassment policy on your notice board and draw it to the attention of all your employees before the party starts.

And don't forget, as an employer you have a duty of care for the safety of your employees and others in your workplace, even at your office party!
